White Stones

White Stones is structured as a long-term creative project centred around Opeth bassist Martín Mendéz. Built on a songwriting approach that combines groove-driven death metal with progressive structure and Latin influence.

From its inception, the material has been written primarily by Martín Mendéz, with a focus on rhythm, feel, and musical flow. The core principle is consistent: “to be groovy – you have to groove, no matter what style of music you play.” This emphasis shapes both composition and arrangement, with bass playing a central role in defining the weight and movement of each track.

The debut album Kuarahy (2020) introduced a writing style rooted in classic death metal, while incorporating a progressive edge and melodic detail. Tracks are structured to balance intensity with accessibility, creating compositions that are both technically driven and rhythmically grounded.

Memoria Viva (2024) reflects a broader compositional identity, melting together disparate genres into a cohesive but varied listening experience. Instrumental passages move between aggression and restraint, with interludes used to create space and contrast within the overall structure.

A key development in the writing approach is the introduction of Spanish-language lyrics. This shift adds a new dimension to phrasing, rhythm, and vocal delivery, influencing the way compositions are constructed and performed. It also reinforces the project’s thematic connection to heritage and identity.

Across the catalogue, the songwriting maintains a clear balance between consistency and evolution. The foundation remains in death metal, but the compositions are not restricted by it, allowing White Stones to have developed a distinct and adaptable musical identity.
