White Stones

From Martin Mendez, bassist of the ubiquitous Opeth comes White Stones, a solo project that rapidly became much more. Named after his birthplace in Uruguay, the project represents a return to his roots, both familial and musical - exploring the forgotten paths of his ancestors by way of the style of music that remains his one true love - death metal.

The project originated during a break in Opeth’s touring schedule, initially without a defined roadmap. As material developed into Kuarahy (2020), ten tracks of accessibly pulsating, groove-oriented death metal with a classic twist, White Stones transitioned from a means of unwinding to an active recording and live project.

With a progressive edge and Latin influence, Kuarahy established the project’s musical identity. Dancing Into Oblivion (2021) marked a continuation of the project’s development, extending the musical identity introduced on Kuarahy and further shaping its balance between groove, aggression and progressive elements.

Recording is led by Mendéz, who has played a central role in writing and instrumentation, supported by a consistent group of collaborators including Eloi Boucherie and Jordi Farré. Additional musicians are introduced where required, both for studio recordings and live performance, allowing the project to expand without losing its core identity, with Albert Martí and Joao Sassetti joining on rhythm and lead guitars respectively.

Dancing Into Oblivion (2021) marked a continuation of the project’s development, extending the musical identity introduced on Kuarahy and further shaping its balance between groove, aggression and progressive elements.

White Stones continued to expand its scope across subsequent releases, developing into a broader collaborative project. By the time of Memoria Viva (2024) they had introduced broader musical scopes, additional contributors, and new production approaches and the band had evolved and melded together disparate genres into a unique sonic experience. Instrumental intensity co-exists with softer passages, creating a dynamic structure shaped by contrast and detail.

A defining shift between Kuarahy and Memoria Viva came with the adoption of Spanish as the primary lyrical language. “Making an album in Spanish is something that I wanted to do for a long time,” notes Mendéz. This decision introduced a new dimension to the project’s identity, reinforcing its connection to heritage while opening a different expressive direction.

Within NMC, White Stones operates as a complementary but distinct entity to Mendéz’s work with Opeth. Activity is aligned around recording cycles, collaborative development, and selective live opportunities, ensuring the project remains sustainable while continuing to evolve.
