The Man-Eating Tree
Artist enquiry
The Man-Eating Tree is a Finnish five-piece band creating atmospheric, melancholic metal
The band was formed in 2009 by drummer Vesa Ranta, following his departure from Sentenced and a period away from music. Together with friends Miika Tenkula, Aaron Rantonen, Janne Markus and Mikko Uusimaa, the idea of a new musical project gradually took shape. The line-up was completed by vocalist Tuomas Tuominen and keyboardist Heidi Määttä, and the first demos were recorded in the spring and summer of 2009. The band presents a mix of gothic, prog and atmosphetic elements.
The Man-Eating Tree released its debut album, Vine, in 2010, followed by Harvest in 2011. During the writing of new material, the line-up evolved, with Antti Kumpulainen taking over vocal duties and Heidi Määttä leaving the band. The new five-piece went on to create In the Absence of Light, released in March 2015.
The album marked a significant step forward, expanding the band's sound into darker, more fragile and intense territory while retaining its crushing heaviness.
The band is now back from a longer hiatus with a fresh line-up and Janne Markus as the founding member.
