Hexvessel
Artist enquiry
Hexvessel were formed in 2009 by Mat McNerney as a boundary-free creative outlet - what he described as a spiritual journey as much as a musical one
Having already built a reputation in underground acts like Dødheimsgard and Code, and later finding wider recognition with Beastmilk and Grave Pleasures, McNerney relocated to Finland, where Hexvessel took shape as a deeply personal and communal artistic vision. Blending psychedelic folk, ritualistic atmospheres, and echoes of classic influences like The Doors and King Crimson, the band developed a sound that feels both rooted in nature and untethered from time.
More a collective than a conventional band, Hexvessel craft immersive, otherworldly music that merges pastoral folk melodies with darker undertones drawn from black metal, doom, and gothic rock. Since their 2011 debut, they’ve built a devoted following through sold-out shows in Finland, European tours with acts like Alcest, and appearances at festivals including Roadburn Festival and South by Southwest. Their evolving catalogue, highlighted by albums such as Dawnbearer, No Holier Temple, and the critically acclaimed When We Are Death (2016), showcases a constant refinement of their unique blend of organic instrumentation, rich harmonies, and introspective songwriting.
Over time, Hexvessel have continued to expand their sonic and thematic scope, releasing seven albums to date and culminating in 2025’s Nocturne via Prophecy Productions. With a sound often described as shamanic and transformative, their music explores themes of nature mysticism, solitude, and spiritual transcendence, creating a world that feels both ancient and deeply personal. Ever-evolving yet unmistakably their own, Hexvessel remain one of the most singular and immersive acts in the psychedelic and folk underground.
