For over 15 years, Swedish quintet Darkane have combined melodic death and technical thrash to stirring effect
Darkane formed in January 1998, driven by a shared passion for fast, aggressive, and technically sharp metal. The lineup brought together guitarists Christofer Malmström and Klas Ideberg, drummer Peter Wildoer, and bassist Jörgen Löfberg.
Early on, the band recorded tracks for a compilation with Soilwork's Björn “Speed” Strid on vocals, but his involvement was brief. As the songwriting quickly progressed, Darkane set their sights on a full-length debut. Wanting a powerful production, they chose to work with producer Daniel Bergstrand at Dugout Studios. On his recommendation, vocalist Lawrence Mackrory was brought in to record what became the band’s debut album, Rusted Angel.
Shortly after, scheduling conflicts prevented Mackrory from touring, leading Darkane to recruit Andreas Sydow as a live replacement. His performances cemented his place in the band, and he soon became their full-time vocalist.
Over the following years, Darkane built a reputation for blending melody with relentless precision. In 2007, Sydow departed, and Jens Broman joined the band, contributing to their fifth album, Demonic Art (2008). After touring and releasing their first live DVD, the band stepped back briefly to focus on building their own recording studio.
In 2011, Broman exited the lineup, and Lawrence Mackrory returned—this time as a permanent member. With longtime collaborator Daniel Bergstrand once again involved, Darkane recorded their sixth album, The Sinister Supremacy, marking a darker and heavier evolution of their sound while staying true to their technical roots.
