Katatonia
Artist enquiry
Since forming in Stockholm in 1991, over the course of an unbelievable thirty-plus years, and thirteen studio albums, Katatonia have never shied away from evolution. Their career has been defined by long-term evolution, consistency, and a refusal to remain static. They have embraced the concept of growing through rejuvenation to soothe their blackened hearts and scarred souls.
Their long way out of the darkness and into the hearts of so many has taken many shapes since their first two genre-bending milestones: Dance of December Souls (1993) and the unforgettable, the immortal, the rightfully revered and oft-copied classic Brave Murder Day (1996).
Post-millennial masterworks like Last Fair Deal Gone Down (2001) and Viva Emptiness (2003) showcased Katatonia’s ever-evolving sound and utterly unique atmospheric identity that has cast its spell over generations of music fans. In the years that followed, Katatonia continued to expand their catalogue with a steady run of well-received releases, including The Great Cold Distance (2006), Night Is the New Day (2009), Dead End Kings (2012), and The Fall of Hearts (2016), each reflecting further evolutions in their sound.
Following the immediate anthem-making of City Burials (2020) and Sky Void of Stars (2023), Katatonia’s 13th album, Nightmares As Extensions Of The Waking State (2025), gets more experimental and more metal without holding back on catchiness - “Nightmares… is a very riff-based and very guitar-heavy album” says Jonas Renkse.
This latest phase also marks a structural evolution within the band. The introduction of new guitarists Nico Elgstrand and Sebastian Svalland signals a shift in personnel, while maintaining the band’s forward momentum and creative renewal.
Their development is rooted in a core creative vision led by Jonas Renkse, whose role as singer, founder and lead songwriter has become increasingly central, culminating in Nightmares… being described as his most personal effort to date.
Within Northern Music Co., activity focuses on sustaining and further developing their position as the master of melancholy metal. NMC supports the band’s ongoing creative evolution, helps build strong stakeholder relationships, and ensures alignment between recording output and touring cycles.
