Ross Jennings
Artist enquiry
As the lead vocalist and co-songwriter of acclaimed progressive metal band Haken, Ross Jennings has established himself as one of the genre's most distinctive voices. Across six studio albums, a live album and an EP, Haken have earned international recognition for their ambitious songwriting and musicianship, culminating in the band's Best UK Artist win at the 2019 Prog Awards. Their 2020 album Virus reached No. 2 on the UK Rock Chart and debuted at No. 52 on the US Billboard 200, further cementing the band's global reputation.
Following the success of Virus, Jennings turned his attention to a long-held ambition: creating music that reflected the broader spectrum of his influences. Written, recorded and self-produced, his debut solo album, A Shadow of My Future Self, showcases a different side of his artistry, moving beyond progressive metal while retaining the melodic sophistication and emotional depth that define his songwriting.
Renowned for his warm, expressive vocal style and thoughtful lyricism, Jennings has built a devoted following through songs that balance memorable melodies with layered storytelling. His solo work embraces a diverse musical palette, drawing inspiration from American AOR, '90s arena rock, indie and alternative artists such as Coldplay, U2 and R.E.M., alongside touches of Nashville country.
The result is an album that takes listeners on a journey through country-tinged acoustic songwriting, shimmering indie pop, soaring rock anthems, heartfelt power ballads and moments of progressive ambition. More personal than anything Jennings had previously released, A Shadow of My Future Self serves as both an exploration of his musical roots and a celebration of the records that first inspired him to write songs.
Reflecting on the project, Jennings says:
"Despite my history, I rarely regard myself as a metal singer, so I was in desperate need to scratch a long-time itch and make a record that appeals to the broader spectrum of my musical palette. With A Shadow of My Future Self, I unashamedly wear my influences on my sleeve, but this is the kind of music I always imagined I'd be making before I took the path less travelled into prog metal. Needless to say, this is somewhat more accessible and radio-friendly stuff!"
